National Wetlands Conservation Programme (NWCP)
Published On:

NWCP was implemented in the year 1985-86.
The Ministry has identified 115 wetlands under the program that urgently need management and protection measures.
Aim
Conservation of wetlands to prevent their further degradation and ensure their wise use for the benefit of local communities and overall conservation of biodiversity.
Objectives
to provide national policy guidelines for wetlands conservation and management.
to offer funding in order to carry out extensive conservation efforts in the designated wetlands
The general management of national and international wetland conservation programs and efforts falls under the purview of the Central Government. It also provides recommendations, technical assistance, and financial support to state governments.
State governments and UT administrations are in charge of implementing the NWCP and managing wetlands to guarantee the responsible use of wetlands.
Guidelines for Naming Important Wetlands in the United States
Under the NWCP, wetlands of national importance are determined using the following standards, which are also outlined in the "Ramsar Convention on Wetlands":
Criteria derived from biological communities and species:
whether it safeguards threatened ecological communities or species that are fragile, endangered or critically endangered.
if it maintains populations of plant and/or animal species that are essential to maintaining the biological variety of a particular biogeographic region.
if it sustains animal and/or plant species populations that are critical to preserving a certain biogeographic region's biological diversity.
If it consistently sustains 20,000 or more water birds, that meets the specific criteria based on water birds. 1% of the members of a population of a single species or subspecies of water birds frequently.
Particular fish-related requirements:
If it sustains a substantial percentage of native fish species, subspecies, or families
