Ecomark Certification: Promoting Eco-Friendly Products
Published On:

The Indian Government has introduced updated rules for the 'Ecomark' certification to promote environmentally friendly products and sustainable consumption. This initiative is part of the broader national mission known as ‘LIFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment), which focuses on reducing environmental impact and promoting green industries. The Ecomark certification applies to a wide range of consumer goods, including food items, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and paints.
Overview of Ecomark Certification
Ecomark, also known as an Eco Label, is a voluntary labeling system in India for consumer products that meet specific environmental and quality standards. The certification aims to raise awareness among consumers about eco-conscious choices while motivating manufacturers to adopt environmentally friendly production processes. The scheme was first launched in 1991, and the new rules provide further structure to ensure sustainable practices.
Criteria for Ecomark Certification
Products eligible for Ecomark certification must adhere to several environmental and quality benchmarks, including:
- Reducing pollution through minimal waste and emissions.
- Using recyclable or recycled materials.
- Limiting the use of non-renewable resources.
- Avoiding materials that negatively impact the environment.
Additional criteria for assessing products include the manufacturing process, use of raw materials, potential environmental impact, and energy consumption. Products are also evaluated based on their biodegradability, waste generation, and potential for recycling. The sustainability of a product throughout its life cycle is an essential consideration.
Certification Process
Manufacturers seeking Ecomark certification must apply to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which oversees the scheme in coordination with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). If the product complies with the guidelines, the certification is granted for a period of three years, or until there is a change in the standards. The Ecomark logo is symbolized by an earthen pot, reflecting the use of renewable resources, such as clay, which have minimal environmental impact and low energy consumption.
Mission LiFE: A Global Environmental Initiative
Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is an Indian initiative aimed at combating climate change and promoting sustainable development on a global scale. The mission encourages both individual and collective actions to protect and preserve the environment, promoting the principles of circular economy—reduce, reuse, and recycle. Mission LiFE emphasizes replacing the ‘use and dispose’ economy with a sustainable model. The initiative also promotes the concept of "Pro Planet People" (P3), advocating for lifestyle changes that benefit the environment.
