Published On:
India has initiated the first payment for hybrid power projects in the northern part of Sri Lanka, a significant step in energy cooperation between the two countries.
The Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, officially appointed the Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy. Sulakshana Jayawardene and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Chairman Shri Ranjith Seppala handed over the payment.
This program reflects India's commitment to support Sri Lanka's energy infrastructure development.
Project details and location
Hybrid power projects are being implemented on the islands of Delft, Nainativu and Anlaithivu in northern Sri Lanka. These projects are the result of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Sri Lanka in March 2022.
An Indian entity is responsible for implementing these projects, which aim to provide a sustainable energy solution by combining solar and wind energy.
Financing and purpose
India is financing the projects with a grant of 11 million USD. Its main objective is to meet the energy needs of the three islands through renewable sources, which will reduce dependence on conventional energy and also promote environmental sustainability.
This initiative is part of India's wider efforts to strengthen its energy partnership with Sri Lanka.
Timeline and completion of the project
Construction work on the project sites has already started and the initiative is expected to be completed by early March 2025. It is scheduled to be handed over to Sri Lankan authorities at the end of April 2025.
Timely completion of these projects will not only increase the energy potential of the islands but also strengthen bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka in the energy sector.
