Transforming Masculinity
Published On:

Promoting gender equality requires reshaping traditional masculinity and fostering men’s active participation in equitable relationships and societal change.
Violence against women is a pervasive issue worldwide, often stemming from entrenched traditional norms of masculinity rooted in control and aggression. Addressing these norms and fostering qualities like empathy, equality, and non-violence among men can redefine masculinity positively. UNESCO’s Transforming MENtalities initiative aims to engage men and boys in promoting gender equality through education and community actions. Collaboration with organizations like ICRW has resulted in impactful interventions across India, such as ‘Mardon Wali Baat,’ which uses storytelling to challenge toxic masculinity. Another example, Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS), focuses on classroom discussions to foster equitable attitudes among adolescents.
Prominent role models embracing caregiving and equitable partnerships also help normalize gender equality. Actions like public commitments to paternity leave create conversations that reshape societal perceptions of masculinity. Changing gender norms requires systemic efforts and individual participation. These steps empower men to reject stereotypes, reflect on privileges, and contribute positively to gender equity in families and communities. Such efforts demonstrate that when men actively embrace gender equality in everyday life, sustainable societal change becomes achievable.
