Mechanism

- Thawing of permafrost releases stored carbon (CO2 and methane)

- Released gases contribute to global warming

- More warming speeds up permafrost thaw

- Estimated 1,400-1,600 gigatons of carbon are stored

 

Current impacts:

- Permafrost is warming 2-3 times faster than the rest of the world

- Increased microbial activity, releasing more carbon

- Landscape changes (thermokarst lakes, ground collapse)

- Disruption of the ecosystem and thus the wild life/vegetation.

 

Climate impact:

- Adds to global warming

- Could liberate 130-160 gigatons carbon by 2100

- Threatens the target of Paris Agreement

- May induce irreversible tipping points

 

Mitigation is a must through:

- Sharpest cut in global emission

- Climate monitoring especially in the Arctic
