Supreme Court to pronounce judgement on juvenile's right to privacy today

Published On:

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a judgment on Tuesday in a suo motu case centred on the 'juvenile's right to privacy'. The case comes after the Calcutta High Court made controversial remarks advising juveniles to 'control their sexual desires'.

Objectionable remarks by Calcutta High Court

A bench headed by Justice A.S. Oka has criticised the high court's remarks, terming them 'highly objectionable and totally inappropriate' and a violation of juveniles' rights to dignity and privacy.

Justice Oka stressed that judges should not express personal views or make moral remarks from the bench.

Call to decriminalise consensual acts

The Calcutta High Court had also proposed decriminalising consensual sexual acts involving juveniles above the age of 16. The court emphasised the responsibility of juveniles to protect their dignity and privacy, while urging juveniles to respect these rights.

Changes in India's power export rules

India has amended its power export rules, allowing power exporters to redirect electricity to the Indian grid if payments are delayed from partner countries such as Bangladesh. The change is aimed at reducing political risk.

Adani Power operations in Bangladesh

Adani Power's Godda plant in Jharkhand supplies 1,496 MW of power to Bangladesh under a 25-year agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). Despite the new rule, Adani Power said its existing contract would remain unaffected.

Challenges and criticisms

Bangladesh is facing problems of underutilisation and excess capacity in its power sector, partly due to fuel supply constraints.

The high cost of imported coal for the Godda plant has also been criticised, leading the BPDB to request a revision of prices. Experts suggest that the regulatory change provides greater flexibility to Indian exporters and reduces dependence on external markets, thereby reducing potential risks.
