Weakened cancer cells can form solid tumors with the help of their progenitors

- Researchers have demonstrated that drug-resistant mutant cells experience significant changes in growth rate even without exposure to the drug. This was related to the environmental conditions in which the cells existed.

 

- When cultured separately, drug-resistant cells exhibited slower growth than their parent cell lines. However, the drug-resistant cells showed a much faster growth rate when cultured with their parental cells.

 

- If this behavior is widespread then future therapies may focus on disrupting these ecological interactions, potentially improving cure rates.
